Closed Sinus Lift

The cavity in the skull that is filled with air is called the sinus. When an implant is to be placed, the sinuses sometimes need to be lifted. There are 2 types of sinus lift surgery: Open and closed.

A closed sinus lift is performed when a lift of more than 4-5 mm is required. Under a local anaesthetic, the floor of the maxillary sinus is broken open with special instruments called osteotomes, the sinus is lifted and bone powder is inserted into the resulting cavity. The implant screws are usually inserted into the jaw during the same operation. Simultaneous placement of implants with a closed sinus lift shortens the implant treatment process by 6 months. The surgical area is closed with sutures and the procedure is completed.

Issues to consider following the application of a closed sinus lift:

  • Smoking should be discontinued.
  • Paying attention when performing breathing-straining actions such as coughing and sneezing
  • Avoiding actions such as blowing the nose, putting water in the nose
  • Avoiding sports activities that speed up breathing
  • Staying in the sun should be avoided because of the risk of bleeding.
