Open Sinus Lift
The cavities on either side of the nose filled with air are called sinuses. These cavities in the sinuses influence the implant that is to be made for missing teeth. When more bone is needed for an implant treatment or when the sinuses are close to the upper jaw, an open sinus lift surgery ( sinus lift) is performed. Following this procedure, a stronger and healthier bone is achieved.
An open sinus lift is a surgical procedure that is usually performed by a specialist under local anaesthetic. Sinus area is lifted as much as needed for the implant and the procedure is finished. An open sinus lift is not a harmful procedure. If not performed by good and competent doctors, however, infections may occur as a result of the procedure. The procedure is painless and takes an average of 45 minutes. After open sinus lift, the complete recovery process takes 3-6 months. The swelling that occurs after the operation recedes within 2-3 days.
There are some factors to consider after the procedure:
- Extreme heat should be avoided
- Do not spit for 24 hours
- Smoking should be stopped for at least 10 days
- Forced situations such as sneezing and coughing should be avoided as far as possible. In these situations, the mouth should not be closed.
- Sports and activities that strain breathing should be avoided
- After the operation, activities such as diving or flying should be avoided for 1 month.
- A cold compress should be applied after the procedure to prevent swelling.
- Prescribed medications should be taken.
